Bourque sets record in style

By The Associated Press

TAMPA, Fla. -- Ray Bourque became Boston's all-time leading scorer in style -- with the winning goal. For good measure, he added two assists as the Bruins beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-0 Saturday night.

Bourque moved up to 1,342 career points, surpassing Johnny Bucyk's team mark of 1,339.

The defenseman wasted little time in setting the new standard. Bourque's slapshot from the left circle beat Rick Tabaracci at 5:33.

"What makes it real nice is we won the game," Bourque said. "Whenever you break a record or do something like that, a win to go along with it makes it a lot more enjoyable."

Bourque's original left-point shot was blocked in the high slot. After picking up the rebound, his second-chance blast deflected off Tabaracci's stick.

Bourque also helped Boston break open a one-goal game, assisting on third-period goals by Ted Donato and Rob Dimaio.

Donato scored from in close at 1:37 and Dimaio added an empty-netter with 1:31 left.

Bucyk, Boston's director of alumni community relations, attended the game.

"It couldn't have been broken by a better person or greater hockey player," Bucyk said. "I was very happy for Ray. It's a 29-year-old record. It's about time it was broken. Records are meant to be broken."

The goal was Bourque's 10th this season and 353rd overall. He also has 989 assists.

"I was a little surprised that shot went in," Bourque said. "I really didn't see it go in. I saw everybody else lift their sticks. It went in, it's over and it was nice."

Bourque set the new standard in his 1,264th game. Bucyk (545 goals, 794 assists) established the mark over 1,436 games.

"What he has done for 18 years game in and game out ranks right up there with the great players," Boston coach Steve Kasper said. "He's an incredible individual. I don't think anyone will realize how good he is until he retires."
